Sapref Bursaries 2020 - 2021


Sapref bursaries are offered by the SAPREF refinery, which is jointly owned by Shell Refining SA and BP Southern Africa, is the largest crude oil refinery in sub-Saharan Africa. It is situated in Durban and is home to some of South Africa’s top petrochemical professionals.If you are studying towards a Bachelor of Science degree and have the potential, determination and zest to achieve, then you could qualify for a SAPREF bursary!

Sapref Bursaries Categories


Sapref offers bursaries to students in the following fields of study:

  • Chemical Engineering
  • Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering 
  • Electrical Engineering

Sapref Bursaries Eligibility


Students who have obtained an exemption in grade 12 and who have been accepted at a recognised South African university and students who are already enrolled at university are eligible to apply. 

Selection is based primarily on academic merit. However, we look for well-rounded individuals who demonstrate potential to excel in other areas of their lives. Applicants undergo a selection process, which comprises of panel interviews and tests. 

Holders of other bursaries, scholarships or grants are not eligible to apply except where these are received as merit awards. Those interested in the Sapref bursaries scheme can apply in writing between May and August of each year to.

Each Sapref bursary consists of an annual grant for full-time study that is renewable annually, based on academic performance.

Sapref Bursary Amount

The bursary will cover successful applicants cost towards:
  • Tuition 
  • Residence fees 
  • Meals 
  • Books 
  • Practical work experience as set by the University.
  
Sapref Bursary Prerequisites 
  • South African citizenship 
  • Studying towards a Bachelor of Science or confirmed acceptance from a South African University
  • Minimum of 60% average in 2013 mid-year exam results.

Applicants will undergo a selection process, which includes psychometric tests and panel interviews. Successful applicants get a chance to work at SAPREF during their vacation periods, allowing them to gain practical experience in their chosen field of study.
