The Sugar Industry Trust Fund for Education (SITFE)was launched in 1965 as a private sector initiative. In its 48-year history, SITFE has provided bursaries to over 9 700 students, financed school building projects, given assistance to tertiary institutions and has worked closely with specialist educational organisations to improve overall education standards.

Who Can Apply?

• Applicants from the sugarcane growing provinces of
KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga
• Applicants must be registered or have applied in the following
disciplines at a University of Technology: Science, Engineering,
or Agriculture, in Kwa-Zulu Natal or Mpumalanga
• Field of study must be industry related
• Applicants must be South African citizens
• Preference will be given to students from rural communities and who consider pursuing a career in rural regions
Special Note
• A maximum of six awards are granted annually
• Two awards may be based purely on merit. The balance of four awards are based on both merit and need.
• Participation in and contribution to the tertiary and community life will be favorably considered

Bursary application forms may only be ordered if the applicant is not able to apply online. Details of where to apply for forms will be avialable from 1 April on this forum. Forms may only be ordered from 1 April to 31 August.

Only applications from South African citizens studying at public educational institutions will be considered.

Bursary Requirements/ Criteria

  • The main criteria used in the selection of successful applicants are financial need, academic potential and career-oriented study programmes.
  • Preference is also given to applicants from rural areas and to female applicants.
  • Studietrust school bursaries (Grade 9 to 12 only) are aimed at learners who maintain an average of at least 70% in all their subjects. Preference will be given to learners with Mathematics* and Science as subjects. (*Pre-2008: Mathematics Higher Grade; post-2008: Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy.)
  • Full-time students at Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges and Agricultural Colleges are eligible for bursaries.
  • University of Technology and University students who study full-time, with above 50% in all their subjects, and who follow career-oriented programmes that are in demand in the labour market, are eligible. Agriculture, Commerce, Engineering and Education (with Maths and Science) are preferred study programmes.
  • No bursaries are available for private tertiary institutions.
  • Please apply timeously for admission for next year to the educational institution of your choice. Call the Helpline of the SAQA Career Advice Services (0860-11-16-73) or visit the websites of the different tertiary institutions for information on the relevant application procedures.

Here you should enter your latest school results to see if you qualify for any of our bursaries. You will also need to know at what type of institution you would want to study, e.g. School, FET College, Agricultural College, University of Technology or University.

You will be asked to select one of the bursary types we offer. Information on all the bursary programmes we administer is available on their website . If you are not sure which option to select, please select the Studietrust bursary. We will consider all applications we receive for all bursaries we administer.

Submit your latest school results. If you are currently in Grade 12 or busy with tertiary studies, please provide your latest (June / mid-year) results. If you are in Grades 8-11 please provide your latest results.

The system will verify whether you qualify before you take all the trouble to complete the application form.
You will receive one of two messages: You either qualify, or you do not. You may retry for qualification by selecting another institution type or study programme. If you qualify for a Studietrust bursary, you may continue the application.

Please read the instructions carefully.
If you want to continue the application you will be required to register by providing your ID number and your Cell Phone number. You will probably not be able to complete the application in one session but will be able to login later with the same details. You can save information entered at any time but once you have finally submitted the application (on or before 30 September) you will not have further access to your application.

Section 1 – General Information

Firstly you have to provide us with general information about yourself. Please ensure that we have correct and reliable contact information.

Section 2 – Study Programme Details
Here you will provide information about if and what you were studying this year, your highest educational qualifications, the names of the institutions you studied and want to study at, the specific study programme you enrolled for next year and the level of your study. You will also provide your final grade 11 and latest grade 12 results, your latest tertiary results if you are already at tertiary level.

Section 3 – Family Details
To comply with the requirements of our sponsors Studietrust needs information about your family. You will have to submit detailed information of your total family income, your parents or guardian, and other dependants living in your house. You will have to provide proof of income, etc. by uploading digital copies of the required documents.

Sections 4-6 – Testimonial and Biographical Information

Download and fill in all three forms. Two testimonials - one from a community or spiritual leader (Section 4) and one from an educational official (e.g. principal, teacher or lecturer) (Section 5) and an “Essay on my Life” (Section 6). After the forms have been completed they must be scanned in a low resolution and uploaded in the appropriate place.

Section 7 – Supporting Document Uploads
The following supporting documentation must accompany your application - if applicable.
Use the browse function to find the relevant file and upload.

1. A certified death certificate for each of your deceased Parent(s) / Guardian / Spouse. If death certificates are not available you may attach sworn affidavits for each of the deceased.
2. A certified copy of the divorce certificate if your parents are divorced or a sworn affidavit if they are separated but not divorced.
3. Sworn affidavits for each of your unemployed Parent(s) / Guardians / Spouse.
4. A certified copy of your guardian’s latest pay-slip or latest financial statement (if she/he is self-employed).
5. A certified copy of for your mother / step-mother's latest pay-slip or latest financial statement (if she is self-employed).
6. A certified copy of for your father / step-father's latest pay-slip or latest financial statement (if he is self-employed).
7. A certified copy of your ID document.
8. Tertiary results. A certified copy of your full academic record including your June results if you are/were a tertiary student.
9. A certified copy of your NSC/Matric results.
10. A certified copy of your school results for June this year.

After you completed all required information and attached all supporting documents you may finally submit your application by declaring that all information given in this form and the attached documents is true and accurate. Remember once you submitted you will not be able to change anything.

To be eligible for the 2014 awards, the student must be registered at a South African university registering for a fourth academic year of study or post-graduate degree and must be studying towards a profession, which on qualification, would be eligible for PPS membership.

PPS membership is open to graduate professionals who hold at least a four-year degree or the equivalent thereof in a profession that is elligible for PPS membership, such as an Honours, Masters, M.Tech or D.Tech degree, and who are practising in the field of their study. Membership is at the discretion of the PPS Board.

Auditor General of South Africa Bursaries

In order to qualify for AGSA bursaries students must meet the following criteria

  • Must be studying or intending to study towards a qualification as a Chartered Accountant (i.e. BCom Accounting CA stream, Bachelor of Accounting CA stream and BCompt) at a University accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
  • Bursary holders are required to serve articles / enter into a training contract with the organisation on completion of their studies as per the bursary contract.
  • Bursaries are awarded to South African citizens only.

All candidates must be:
  • Proficient in English with strong communication skills
  • Have good interpersonal skills
  • Have a drive, determination and commitment to succeed
  • Have strong leadership potential

AGSA Bursaries Requirement for Matric

  •   Must obtain matric exemption and university acceptance
  •   Must obtain at least 60% for English
  •   Must obtain at least 60% for Mathematics (not Maths literacy)

AGSA Bursaries Requirement for University Student

 University students must:

      Obtain over 60% for Financial Accounting
    * 2nd year students:
      Obtain over 60% for Financial Accounting
      Obtain over 60% for Managerial Accounting
    * 3rd and Final year students:

FNB Bursaries for 2017 - 2018 Application Forms

The aim of Fnb bursaries is to give tertiary education access to financially disadvantaged, yet academically strong students. FNB has partnered with established bursary service providers to administer the bursary programme. The selected bursary service providers not only offer access to finance, but also support services to funded students. Candidates must contact the bursary service providers for more information on their application process.


Fnb Bursaries Programme

The Fnb bursaries Fund has partnered with reputable bursary service providers to offer access to education, as well as providing extensive mentorship and support to the students.The bursary programme focuses on the provision of funds for students studying commerce and science degrees.

There is no work-back or pay-back condition on the bursaries; these funds are a pure investment by FNB towards developing future leaders.

If you’ve recently passed or are busy with your Grade 12 and you’re from a historically disadvantaged background, the Exxaro BSc 4 year programme is for you.


The programme is hosted by the University of Pretoria from January to November each year.
The development programme can help to prepare the student to compete on merit for a bursary.
Thus, after successful completion of the first year of this programme, candidates may be considered for an Exxaro Bursary to study a degree or diploma course.
This all inclusive sponsorship for one year (1) covers tuition, book, accommodation, meals fees and contributes towards miscellaneous expenses.

IDC Bursary Information

The Industrial Development Corporation awards bursaries to students who want to pursue tertiary education but do not have enough money to pay for their studies.

IDC bursaries are awarded to students who meet the following criteria:
  • South African citizens with a valid ID number residing in the Republic of South Africa and who qualify for admission to a University or University of Technology and FET college, and are not studying with the aid of an employer or bursary.
  • Applicants must have grade 12 Maths and Science with a minimum of a B aggregate symbol.
  • University or University of Technology students who have already successfully completed one or more years will be considered on their Grade 12 and most recent academic results.
  • If you are already studying towards a degree course for which you are applying for a bursary, you must have passed all courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed.
  • Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited South African university or university of technology.
No bursaries are awarded for studies at a college, e.g. Damelin, Boston, etc.

2. IDC Bursary Value

The value of the bursary for full-time undergraduate/ diploma studies comprises of the following:


In the case of bursars residing with their parents/guardians or privately, a stipend is granted. In the case of students residing in official University/ University of Technology residences,full residence fees are paid to the relevant institution (Catering/Self catering residences).

Tuition and registration fees

A stipend for books and stationery is granted bi-annually.

NB. The bursary may also be awarded for the purpose of acquiring a compulsory post-
graduate qualification in order to obtain a prescribed professional status

6. Bursary Repayment

Bursars may be expected to remain in the employ of the Corporation for a period equal to the number
of years of the awarded bursary. Such employment is subject to the normal selection procedures and
salary and employment conditions of the Corporation.

7. Eperiential Training

The Corporation does not undertake to provide experiential training for bursars.

8. Application and Selection
