BURSARIES - ROAD TRAFFIC INFRINGEMENT

Road Traffic Infringement Agency Scholarships


The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) invites applications for Bursary Scholarships from the unemployed South African citizens for the 2019 academic year in the following fields of study.

Bursaries/Scholarships Available

LLB;
BCom: Finance;
Road Traffic Management Degree or National Diploma.

Applications must: be South African citizens, be studying at an accredited South African Educational Institution in one of the above mentioned field of study, be prepared to enter into an agreement with the Road Traffic Infringement Agency and do counter-service in the Road Traffic Infringement Agency upon completion of the qualification and do not have any other bursary funding.

Applicants must note the following:

Application forms must be posted or hand delivered by not later than the closing date.
Applicants must complete bursary application forms available on the Agency website, attach certified copies of qualifications, recent academic records, Identity Document, proof of registration, proof of guardian’s income, and motivational letter.

Objectives of RTIA

The objectives of the agency are, despite the Criminal Procedure Act, 1977 (Act No. 51 of 1977):

(a) to administer a procedure to discourage the contravention of road traffic laws and to support the adjudication of infringements;
(b) to enforce penalties imposed against persons contravening road traffic laws;
(c) to provide specialised prosecution support services; and
(d) to undertake community education and community awareness programmes in order to ensure that individuals understand their rights and options.

The agency performs its functions in terms of subsection (1)(a) of the AARTO Act by:

(a) receiving notices from any issuing authority if an infringer has failed to comply with an infringement notice;
(b) considering representations from an infringer with regard to an infringement notice relating to a minor infringement;
(c) issuing a courtesy letter to an infringer who has failed to comply with an infringement notice;
(d) issuing an enforcement order against an infringer who has failed to comply with the requirements of a notification or a courtesy letter, or who has failed to appear in court;
(e)issuing a warrant against an infringer who has failed to comply with an enforcement order;
(f)revoking an enforcement order; and
(g) updating the national contraventions register in the prescribed manner.

Bursary Information and Application Details

Bursaries available (2021)

The bursary award covers registration and tuition expenses, up to R25 000. Students will be required to work during vacation period (June and December holidays) and once graduated, they must complete in-house service equal to the duration of their bursary.

Applicants must be studying full-time at one of the following tertiary institutions:
Western Cape: University of Cape Town/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Stellenbosch
Eastern Cape: Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University/ Rhodes University/ University of Fort Hare/ Walter Sisulu University
North-West: North-West University (Potchefstroom/ Mafikeng campus)
Gauteng: Tshwane University of Technology/ University of Johannesburg/ University of Pretoria/ University of Witwatersrand (WITS)/ Vista University
Free State: University of the Free State
Kwa-Zulu Natal: University of Kwa-Zulu Natal/ University of Zululand
Limpopo: University of the North (University of Limpopo)/ University of Venda
All provinces: University of South Africa (UNISA)
 
Who Can Apply?


Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:
South African citizen,
Able to read, speak and write English, as well as one other official language,
Currently studying at tertiary level (bursaries are only awarded for second year of study onward),
Enrolled in one of the recognised tertiary institutions (listed above),
Have obtained a minimum of 60% (“C” symbol) in recent year of study,
A LegalWise Member (or the child/ legal child of a LegalWise Member),
The LegalWise Member must be fully paid up for a minimum of 2 years before application (and must be a member for the entire duration of the bursary award).

Applicants should also display the following personal characteristics:
  • Good interpersonal skills,
  • Great communication skills,
  • Positive attitude,
  • A will to succeed,
  • Able to work in a team,
  • Showing initiative.

It is important to note that the on-line application process requires of you to complete four separate sections: 1) personal details; 2) academic details; 3) attachments and 4) a declaration.

It is important that you complete all these sections and that you attach all relevant documents.

We are not in a position to consider incomplete applications.

Please ensure that you have enough time to complete this on-line form and that you have all the information and attachments/annexures at hand before you start the process.

Bursary Application Dates

It is advisable to apply sooner rather than later and not to wait for the closing date.

The relevant dates are as follows:
